Does Randstad Drug Test Job Applicants in 2023?
Randstad sources staff for thousands of companies either as direct hires or contract workers.
As a direct-hire, Randstad is your recruiter, but you are hired by an employer and paid by an employer. Whatever rules a company has in place about drug testing are the ones you’ll need to follow.
If Randstad lists the company they’re hiring for in a recruitment ad, you may be able to find out about the company’s drug testing requirements by doing a little research before you make a formal application.
For contract workers, Randstad is your employer. They pay you and place you on assignments with their clients on a temporary basis or a temp to permanent basis.
If you’re applying to work for Randstad as a contract employee, you should expect to be asked to take an initial drug test and take further drug tests for new assignments if necessary.
It may turn out that the particular assignment you apply for doesn’t require a drug test, but the majority of contract employees report having to take a test.
Randstad’s associate handbook states that all applicants must pass a drug test if Randstad or the client requires one.
You’ll be asked to take a drug test after a conditional offer of employment has been made.

Do Randstad Conduct Drug Tests on Employees?
Once you’ve been hired for a permanent position with an employer, any further drug testing will be carried out in line with your employer’s drug testing policy. When you complete your employment paperwork, you should be given access to all of the policies that you’ll need to follow.
Depending on the type of industry you’re working in, you may or may not need to take any random drug tests, but it’s usual in most companies for reasonable cause and post-accident or post-incident drug tests to be carried out as necessary.
If you’ve been hired as a Randstad contract worker or associate, you’re subject to their drug testing policy. Randstad maintains a drug-free workplace at their own sites and client sites in order to provide a safe and productive working environment.
You may be required to take a drug test before you start a new assignment if the client requests one.
You may also be subject to random drug testing if Randstad or the client requires it.
You will have to take a drug test if Randstad or their client has reason to suspect that you are using, under the influence of, or in possession of, illegal drugs or alcohol.
If you are involved in a work-related accident that results in an injury or fatality, or damage to equipment or property, and Randstad has reason to believe that drug use caused or contributed to the accident, you will have to take a drug test.
Do The Company Test Saliva Or Urine?
Randstad’s drug and alcohol policy doesn’t specify which drug testing method they use, but current and former employees report that urine testing and saliva testing are both used. They also state that you don’t know which type of test you’ll need to take until you are at the testing site.
Because of this, it’s a good idea to assume you’ll have to take a urine test and make sure you’ve abstained for long enough to be able to pass it.
The drug and alcohol policy does mention that specimens will be collected in private.
Specimens for testing may be collected at the work site, or at an off-site collection clinic.
Which Drugs Does Randstad Test For?
Once again, this will ultimately depend on the client’s requirements. Randstad states in their drug and alcohol policy that all specimens will be tested for the following substances:
- Amphetamines and methamphetamine
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
If a client requests more extensive testing for safety-sensitive roles, these additional substances will be tested for:
Positive drug tests are confirmed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and if the sample remains positive, your result will be passed on to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) for further investigation.
If this happens, the MRO will contact you to discuss any legally prescribed medication you may be taking, which could have produced a false-positive result.
They will also want to know about legitimately prescribed anti-anxiety medication and painkillers that show up in your sample.
If there is a valid reason for a positive test, the MRO will report a negative test result to Randstad.

Drug Test Detection Limits
In order to prepare for your pre-employment drug test at Randstad, you need to know how long drugs can be detected in your system.
Many factors can affect how soon your body will get rid of drug metabolites. Your body composition, level of physical activity, level of drug use, frequency of drug use, diet, and hydration level all affect your drug detox period.
The following limits are guidelines and you may be drug-free a little sooner or a little later. And because you won’t know which type of drug test Randstad will carry out ahead of time, we’ll only cover detection times for urine, which has a longer detection window than saliva.
- Marijuana – up to 30 days but can persist for much longer with regular heavy use.
- Cocaine – up to 4 days
- Opiates – up to 4 days
- Amphetamines and methamphetamine – up to 4 days
- Phencyclidine (PCP) – up to 14 days
- Barbiturates – short-acting drugs 1 day, long-acting drugs for up to 21 days
- Benzodiazepines – short-acting drugs up to 72 hours, long-acting drugs up to 30 days
- Methadone – up to 7 days
- Propoxyphene – up to 48 hours
Does Randstad Test For Marijuana In States Where It’s Legal?
Even though marijuana is legal in some states for recreational and/or medicinal use, it is still illegal at the federal level. Randstad will test your sample for marijuana regardless of its legal status.
Marijuana is a schedule 1 drug and it cannot be prescribed legally, so having a medical marijuana card or a written marijuana recommendation is not the same thing as having a prescription.
While all positive drug tests are referred to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) for further investigation, it’s unlikely that anything other than a current, legal prescription would be accepted as a valid reason for the presence of any drug in your sample.
Take A DIY Drug Test before You Apply For A Job At Randstad
DIY drug tests are easy to find, inexpensive, and accurate. You can save yourself a whole lot of anxiety and disappointment if you make sure that you will test negatively during the period you intend to apply for jobs.
Depending on the type of drug you use, you’ll need to pick up either a 5-panel test or a 10-panel test. Some drug tests also screen for a single substance.
It’s a good idea to test yourself no matter the drug you use, but if you use marijuana, you will really benefit from testing because the detox period can be so long.
Once you get a negative result, you can apply for a job at Randstad and have confidence that you’ll pass your drug test, even if they test you on the same day.
When you apply for any type of job with Randstad, you should plan on having to take a drug test.
If you’re applying for a direct-hire position, and Randstad is simply your recruiter, then you may not be asked to take a test, but it wouldn’t be wise to risk a possible job offer on a maybe.
