Before you apply to a trucking company or their CDL school, it’s helpful to know what to expect as far as drug testing is concerned. In this article, we’ll go over the Stevens Transport drug test so you won’t face any unexpected stumbling blocks.
Does Stevens Transport Drug Test in 2024?
You will have to pass a drug test if you want to drive a truck for Stevens Transport. There’s no getting around this hiring requirement because the pre-employment drug test is mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
If you’re new to trucking, you should know that every trucking company will drug test you before they agree to hire you.
Does Stevens Transport CDL School Drug Test?
If you’re planning on getting your CDL via a Stevens Transport driving school, you will need to pass a urine drug test once you arrive. If you fail the drug test, you’ll be sent home and will not be allowed onto their training program.
Failing this drug test is a completely avoidable situation because you can make sure that you’re clean before you schedule your attendance at the school.
DIY drug testing kits that you use at home are cheap and readily available at pharmacies, Target, Walmart, and online stores like Amazon and eBay.
Once your test is clear, you can attend school without any concerns about failing the drug test.
What Kind Of Drug Test Does Stevens Transport Do?
Stevens Transport is required by law to screen CDL holders using a Department of Transportation drug test. The only form of drug test currently approved by the DOT is a urine drug test.
In addition to the mandatory urine drug test, they may require you to take a hair follicle test.
Hair follicle drug testing can detect drug use going back as far as 3 months, so you’ll need to abstain for a long period to be certain that you can pass the test.
Why do they use both types of testing?
Unless someone is an addict, a urine drug test can be passed easily enough by abstaining from drugs for a few days to a few weeks (depending on the drug). This means that a company could unwittingly hire a habitual drug user, and they wouldn’t know unless there was a reason for a further drug test, or the individual was selected for a random test.
That could mean that Stevens Transport had drivers in their trucks with drugs in their system. They obviously don’t want that to be the case, so they use a stricter drug test that can detect drug use over a long period and is, therefore, harder to pass.
When Does Stevens Transport Drug Test?
As already mentioned, you’ll need to take a drug test if you attend a Stevens Transport CDL school.
Once you graduate with your CDL, the actual hiring process takes place at Stevens Transport headquarters in Dallas, Texas. You’ll need to take another drug test at headquarters and if you fail, they won’t hire you.
Newly qualified CDL holders are paired with a trainer to get the necessary hours behind the wheel before they can pick up a truck to drive solo. This training lasts for roughly 5 weeks.
Once you graduate from that training, you have the option to go home for a break, or you can go directly to the yard to collect the truck that you’ll be driving from then on.
Trainers recommend that you go to pick up the truck right away because you’ll be drug tested again at the yard.
If you’ve been home and were tempted to take something you shouldn’t, you’ll fail the drug test as soon as you arrive to pick up your truck.
So far we’ve outlined 3 instances when you’ll need to take a drug test with Stevens Transport.
You’ll also need to take a drug test if you’re involved in an accident if you give reasonable cause for suspicion that you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and when you’re called to give a sample for random testing.

Post Accident Drug Testing
DOT rules specify when a drug test is required by law following an accident. If you were involved in an accident that meets any of the following criteria you will have to report for an immediate drug test.
- An accident involving a human fatality even if you weren’t at fault.
- An accident that causes an injury that requires immediate treatment away from the scene, and for which you are at fault and received a citation.
- An accident that causes disabling damage to your own or another vehicle, where the vehicle has to be towed, and you received a citation for being at fault.
Stevens Transport may also require a post-accident drug test in the event of minor accidents, and you’ll need to check their drug and alcohol policy for full details.
Reasonable Cause Drug Testing
Reasonable cause drug testing is carried out when there’s a suspicion that you’re operating a commercial motor vehicle (or about to be operating one) under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
You could be reported when you arrive at a yard to pick up a load when you drop off a load with a client, or even if a member of the public calls Stevens to report bad driving.
Likewise, if anyone notices drug paraphernalia in your truck or a 6 pack of beer, you could be reported and then told to report for an immediate drug test.
Random Drug Testing
Random drug testing is a DOT requirement. All CDL holders at Stevens Transport are entered in a pool, and at regular intervals, names are selected at random for a drug test.
Once you receive a notice for a random drug test, you must report for the drug test right away. You can even be selected for a random drug test during your time off.
As you can see, continuing to use drugs isn’t compatible with a truck driving career.
How Does A Urine Drug Test Work?
When you take a urine drug test, you’ll need to provide a urine sample for analysis. This is a very straightforward process and all you need to do is ‘pee in a cup’.
Your sample will be collected by a trained, DOT-authorized collection agent. You’ll be given a specimen cup and sent into a bathroom where you’ll need to produce at least 45ml of urine.
If you can’t produce a sample right away, you’ll be told to wait until you’re able to urinate, and you will be able to drink some water to help that happen.
Your sample will be checked for the temperature to make sure that you haven’t used a urine substitute. The bathroom has a blue dye in the toilet and there’s no water at the washbasin so you can’t adulterate your sample.
Once you’ve produced the sample, you complete the paperwork, and the sample is sent to a DOT-authorized lab for testing.
You’ll find out within a couple of days if you’ve passed or failed the test.
How Does A Hair Follicle Drug Test Work?
A hair follicle drug test uses hair from your head, or if you’re bald or have a buzz cut, they’ll use hair from your body instead.
A technician will clip around 150 hairs from your head or from your chest or armpit. The hair collection won’t hurt, and once your hair sample is ready, the technician will package it up and send it to a DOT-accredited lab for analysis.
What Drugs Does Stevens Transport Test For?
Stevens Transport has to test for the drugs listed by the Department of Transportation. These are:
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Opioids
- Amphetamines
- Methamphetamine
- MDMA
The specific opioids you’ll be tested for are:
- Morphine
- Codeine
- Heroin
- Hydrocodone
- Hydromorphone
- Oxycodone
- Oxymorphone
What Happens If You Fail The Drug Test?
If you fail the drug test at the CDL school, you’ll be sent home. You may be able to reapply at a later date.
For failed drug or alcohol tests once you’re a CDL holder, you’ll be immediately removed from your driving position, and you will normally receive a termination notice within a few days.
Your positive DOT urine test result will be logged with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association database, and your result will remain on the database for 5 years or until you’ve completed a Return to Duty (RTD) process.
You will not be allowed to drive a commercial motor vehicle until the RTD process is complete.
This involves meeting with a substance abuse professional (SAP) and following all of their recommendations which can include completing a drug treatment program and taking drug education classes.
You’ll also need to take a minimum of 6 drug tests over a 12-month period, and you may be required to take regular drug tests for as long as 5 years.
All costs associated with the RTD process are your responsibility.
Recap
You’ll be required to take several drug tests when you apply to be a driver for Stevens Transport.
Stevens Transport uses the DOT urine drug test as well as a hair follicle drug test. Because of this, it will be very difficult for a regular drug user to pass the tests.
In addition to the pre-employment drug tests, you will be subject to random drug testing and post-accident and reasonable cause drug testing.
